Bullying.
From someone’s facebook status:
What about this. The boy you punched in the hall today didn’t commit suicide. But you made him want to. He doesn’t. He continues with his day, but you brought him to a dark place. The girl you called a slut isn’t a virgin, but she regrets what she has done and you’re only rubbing her face in it. The boy you called lame doesn’t have to work every night to support his family, but suffers from social anxiety and struggles in situations that involve following social cues. And you only make it harder. The girl you pushed down isn’t abused, hasn’t done anything to you, but you pushed her anyways. You push her down because you can. That girl you called fat isn’t starving herself, but instead eats more to make herself feel better, and suffers from alarmingly high amounts of self-hatred and self-loathing. And you encourage her to hate herself. That old man you just made fun of didn’t serve for our country but instead served in a loving, life-long marriage to his now deceased wife, something a majority of the country can’t do, not even you, the one who spits out I love you’s like they’re carbon dioxide and falls in and out of relationships like they mean nothing. You judge him for how he looks as opposed to how he acts. And that boy you just made fun of for crying? He is in touch with his emotions and hasn’t fallen under the societal standard of “real men don’t cry,” a lie. He hasn’t believed that he has to repress his true emotions and feelings and train himself and other males to do the same. He’s just a boy. A boy who felt. So he cried. And you tormented him because of it, you thought of yourself as better because you kept your eyes dry. You thought of him as something less than human because some salt water dripped from his face.
You shouldn’t assume that people are going through tragedies, and, therefore, stop bullying them.
You should remember that they’re human beings. And that they have issues of their own, whether you consider them of importance or not. You should remember that they feel. You should remember that you ARE responsible for those you affect, whether you’d like to admit it or not, because only you can control your actions against them.
